How to get FTP to ROOT with a VPS server

How do i get on FTP with root on a vps server? I need to do this because i want to put the gameserver addon but i need access to FTP.

I asked my host, and they said a lot of complicated stuff that i didnt understand about SSH etc. Maybe you guyes could explain further.

im new to all of this, i didnt know. I meant "Secure FTP", or a program that is secure FTP - cant remember its name.
