how to restore a mail box

i have daily backup
created a temp dir moved a copy of the tgz into it
untarred it

went to usr/mail cp to home/usr/mail

this did not restore the email of that box

please advise

Did you set permissions accordingly when complete?

/scripts/mailperm &

Might want to tail the maillog (/var/log/maillog), if you want an exact error on why the spool file is being ignored or rejected.
(tail it while someone is connecting)

or test it yourself with a pop3 login (telnet localhost 110)
