Assuming you created your own style using the Branding editor, go back to the editor page, at top is a link to Download or Delete Branding, click that. Click Download link to the right of your style.
I have tried that with a back-up of my theme as .zip imported but nothing. It seems to mess up and set theme back to default.

You should be editing a copied theme, not a main theme.
Advanced Guide to Branding - cPanel Documentation

Warning
Do not edit an existing theme. If you do this, your changes will be overwritten the next time cPanel updates. Instead, create a new theme with your desired changes.

If you create a copy of one of the default themes, and edit the copy, it will not be overwritten by a cPanel update. The documentation Infopro linked to explains the correct way to make a custom theme so that it is preserved across cPanel updates.
