    How would my friend...

A guy and I are creating a site, we have already bought hosting and a domain. The only problem is that he was the one that bought the hosting but i am the one building and updating the site, we cant give me access to the cPanel (for security reason, becuase his credit card number is shown on it). So is there a way that he could set up an FTP so i can update and put all the files on the site without going threw the cPanel? Neither of us have any experience with cPanel so help would be appreciated.

In cPanel he can create an FTP user for you.

Be sure he gives the user web root FTP access.

There is no credit card details stored in cPanel or WHM.

There is no reason that the two of you cannot share the cPanel user/pass, if you are partners that is, as there are no security reasons I can think of. Again that is if you are partners and intend to be friendly. You can only buy hosting in the one name IIRC.

But as mentioned above you can be alloted an ftp access but it makes life much easier if you can access the account proper.

I do lots of site design work for clients and I must have cPanel access to be able to create data bases and email piping etc. When finished with the client all they do is change the password and they are on their own again. It is hard to work on designing a web site without full cPanel access.

Giving someone root ftp access to the account can be just as destructive if you are thinking in terms of security.

    :)

If you are with a host that has ported the CC numbers visibly to a Cpanel front end you need to find a new host. Not only is it not really legal it is beyond stupid. There are a lot of rules on how you store CC #s properly.

That said the post above is correct that he can allow you to just have FTP access to a specific directory or the root directory.
