well I just logged into 4 machines ..all different configs all with cpanel. One was a celeron with latest updates and only 256ram, 2 were old apache and PHP like mine and one was brand new cpanel box a he.net network.

In all these I found about 50-60 lines per day of the log file. I found about teh same number oif seg 11's and about the same SIGUSR1 received. Doing graceful restart on all these boxes. It's funny ..one of these servers had plenty on there just like the rest but it only has one site and does less that 20MB traffic per month. Another has 400 sites and does 275GB a month .They all seem to have tons of this in the logs. I just checked a local machine I have here that is just a red hat box and I only found 2 lines and that was a month ago.

What's this all abaout PHP maybe being buggy?

From Cpanel itself with 4 email and bugs reporting:
Answer: Silent & no reply at all

From #linux & #apache at irc.openprojects.net:

For us, the CGI/PERL goes blank after just about that time.. and the server gets hunged once a day..

No answer from support... for days.. just one where they wanted login information. But nothing has happened.

OK .....HEY NIck !!!! wake up man !!!! unstick that keyboad from your forehead man!!! wake up!! QUESTION: Have we all got a big cock roach crawling around in all these cpanel boxes or did you stick a timebomp in cpanel that likes to tic at exactally 10 minute intervals.

I have now checked 7 cpanel servers and they all have this tic tic tic restart at 10 minutes each. Even cpanel boxes with no accounts running on them.

Wuzz up wid dat? could you shine your golden light on this for us Master???

My only problem with Apache restarting every 10 minutes is my curiosity piquing :) I'm not too worried about it because after a SIGUSR1 signal Apache processes are allowed to finish their work before restart takes place, so there's nothing abruptly terminated. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Cpanel rotating the bytes_log files to update the accounts' bandwidth usage.

As for the segmentation faults I doubt very much that it has anything to do with the SIGUSR1 signals.

I am finding both errors seg11 and the graceful restart on both mod_gzip and without mod_gzip boxes.. and out of these 6 boxes there are 6 different hardware profiles, 3 different kernels, RH6.2, 7.1, 7.2 ...all kinds of different apache versions only one with latest ..all these are different kinds of hardware as well. Pretty much the only thing they have in common is cpanel.

By no means am **I** saying this is a bad thing ..in fact it must be pretty normal since we all see it. I personally would just like to know what is causing it. I tailed both chksrvd log and error_log at the same time and thats not it. I have however seen apache fail to send a page right at that time interval and that also was not a php or cgi script ..just a plain page. But so far not one complaint from a single client. It must be ok.

If you're getting segmentation faults, Id recommend you recompile apache by either hand or buildapache.

but...

Ive just checked my apache logs and Im also getting the errors about segmentation errors, although none about SigUSR1.

u know something nick really rocks! ;-)

i got to speak to him and this is wat he asked me to do.

1. use /scripts/easyapache to rebuild apache, choose advanced, choose to compile perl, leave everything else like that the same if you are not sure.

Looks like perl is suppose to be compiled again with the new apache.

now my apache is giving no more segmentation errors, no restarts every 10 mins. i have been watching the log file for the past 46mins and no gracefull restarts msgs.

try it out and do let me know if it works on ur servers!

Anand

probs again

:(

seems like it happened again, just after my post, the log said graceful restart.

Here we go again guys...

Atleast one probs of mine was solved with the perl recompile, in WHM, the service status said apache failure and apache status showed apache running, now after the perl compile with new apache, service status also says apache up :)

waiting for this graceful restart probs to b solved nick...

Anand

Something is definitely wrong... Nick where are you? :p

Why do you want all web servers to restart after 10 minutes?? ;)

Its only going to gracefully restart apache if it processes a log file so apache will reopen the log file and begin writing to it again so you don't loose your stats. If you are getting segfaults, try commented out any extra apache modules you have added.. ie mod_perl, mod_headers .. etc as some of them are not compatible.
