I really need your help, high Memory Usage

My people at The Planet have given up trying to find a solution and are now telling me that 'top' is telling me RAM is so low because Linux 'reserves' most of the system's memory, and therefore it shows up as being in use.

I think that's a large load of bullplop.

It is. Just look at swap usage in top and you can see that it is not buffered memory. If it was, swap would not be full too. My memory and swap are both full when the sytem crashes. MRTG looks like a roller coaster when viewing mem and swap history graphs.

I have been having the same problem for about 4-5 days now. I can not find anything besides PHP/MySQL is using a lot of resources. MySQL hits 99% every 1-5 minutes, then backs off. The userid for the process is MySQL. In CP when I look at the MySQL processes, there is hardly anything going on EXCEPT - and I think this has something to do with it - eximstats.

Now it seems to be httpd that is causing the high load, but there are not but 10-15 people accessing the server on a regular basis.

I've noticed the same issue described here on a few of our servers. Our snmp enabled monitoring software and top both show very high memory usage. However we can't see any of the processes that are eating up all this memory. The process listing in top doesn't show anything with high usage. Also according to top most of the swap memory is free.

It's definately possible that we aren't reading these stats right but it seems that others are having the same problem. Is there a diffinitive way to see exactly what processes are using all this RAM? I'll try rebooting one of the servers and see if that changes the situation.

Rebooting freed up all the memory immediately. Would still like to know the cause...

Someone from the Cpanel support team needs to get on this. I am having the same issue now for over a month. I think i have spent roughly 50+ hours tweaking php.ini, my.cnf, httpd.conf to no resolve. I am running FC2 w/CPANEL Current on Supermicro Hardware w/ Samsung Original memory modules. The machine is mirrored SATA drives. Someone must have a clue as to whats going on. This is very annoying.

I have firmwared my bios, memtestx86 the memory, tested the cpu, recompiled custom kernels, you name it. I am curious to know if everyone with this problem is running Fedora Core 2?

In our case, embrassing as it is, I believe it was operator error. The tech who was viewing the Top readout could not read it properly. The memory is clearly being used for disk caching operations as it should be. The "free" command shows an easy to understand memory usage readout.

I knew as much, but a webserver that only only loads at about 40 users at one time should not be using 1gig of ram and another 256mb of swap at the least. This doesnt make sense. Funny thing is I had these exact users on an old server with crappy, I mean crappy hardware and it ran better. That was RH8 this is FC2.

sounds like a leak somewhere in eximd (probably in spamd) or httpd, A cron that run /scripts/restartsrv_httpd and /scripts/restartsrv_exim each 12 hours fixed that on almost all of my servers.

I wouldnt be surprised if you had a very uneconomical query, this can cause bad mysql usage. My server use to crash very often due to one bad query, i added some indexes to mysql and it sorted it all.

If your pages dont change on every pageview i recommend jpcache, do a search on google
