Did you try changing timeout on the server?

    timeout is set in httpd.conf

    ssh in and:
    - pico /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf
    - search for the word timeout (CTRL+W) in httpd.conf
    - by default it is set to 300 (5 minutes)
    - change it to more seconds before it times out
    - save the change (CTRL+O - enter)

5 minutes is a long time so if you change it to be even longer during the transfer you should change it back to be shorter again after the transfer.

I don't know if this helps but you could give it a try.
