Importing a Godaddy zone file?

We regularly switch customers from Godaddy to our hosting and on occasion, we need to move the Godaddy ZONE file entries to cPanel. It's been a PITA for years! I have searched high and low for a way to import a godaddy exported zone file into WHM or cPanel and for the life of me cannot locate instructions or any tool that converts GD zone files.

I've seen this request in the feature request site but after almost a decade, it's still not possible?

Am I missing something somewhere, a conversion tool or simple instructions on how to do this?

Sure, here are a couple. None mention Godaddy but they do mention the ability to import zone files. I even searched for an online tool that would rewrite a Godaddy zone file into a cPanel/BIND compatible format. Nothing.

That first one is marked as "not planned" since it already existed.

The second one is specific to exporting a file that already exists in cPanel, but not importing one. The problem with importing from a third-party is that you always have to keep up with someone else's tools and schedule. Do we just look to the DNS that is live to read that data, or would we try and integrate into the GoDaddy system somehow? I'm not sure either is a good option, which is likely why we haven't created a way to do that just yet.

Good question. I would say the optimal way might be to have a command line /script that accepts input and output so that it writes back to a file to be verified before moving the zone file into place. I know that GD hasn't really changed the format of their zone files in almost a decade and they're a big cPanel customer. I have ChatGPT grinding some bash code now to see if I can make this happen.

Will do! I'll update this thread once it's done. CloudFlare imports Godaddy zone files because GD's system rarely changes.
