In need of cPanel / IMAP primer!

I understand what IMAP is (versus POP3) and would like to try using it for some business email accounts that I use often while traveling. Do you do anything special to signify to cPanel that a new mail account is IMAP? I assume you just use SquirrelMail to access the mail account? Could someone provide a detailed primer on this? I've never used IMAP before.

Use Webmail, and/or, check your mail using IMAP (specify this in your email client)

Both services are available all the time for all accounts (POP3, and IMAP)

So anytime you use webmail like SquirrelMail, you're using IMAP and the messages will stick around forever and be searchable and all that good stuff?
