    Let's say our domain is going to be abc.com. Inorder to define the hostname as per below we thing we think we should set it to hostname.abc.com. If we set it to hostname.abc.com do we have to set this name anywhere else on the server or is it just a 'dummy url'?
    Thanks.

    Your hostname should be a Fully Qualified Domain Name that will not be used elsewhere on the server. You should never set your hostname to an name that is already used (www, ftp, mail, etc) or to the name of an account on the server (www.domain.com). This means that your hostname should never be a domain name and especially not the name of your domain!!

    WHM > Hostname > Change to: hostname.abc.com

    Then add the "A" entry for hostname into ABC.COM dns zone:

    hostname.abc.com. IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx = Server IP Address

    Go on, have a guess
    And you do need the A record that slipo explains, otherwise you will find many external mail servers rejecting email sent from the server.
