On a cPanel-based server, PHP should be installed by default. Is this not the case for you?

Have you tried reading the installation documentation on the PHP website? I'm sure that should explain things!

if it debian you can install using apt-get,

for example to intall php4 become root type
    Code:
    apt-get install php4
but if you want to compile it from source, you need to read the install doc from www.php.net

    Go on, have a guess
Since you're not running cPanel, it's OT and not appropriate for these forums.
