Assuming installing a .so rather than a libtool archive.

chmod: cannot access `/usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so': No such file or di rectory
    apxs:Error: Command failed with rc=65536
    .
    make: *** [install-sapi] Error 1

then i though to install php4 on same server and i get

checking lex output file root... ./configure: line 2554: lex: command not found
configure: error: cannot find output from lex; giving up

shud i do any step like make clean for php5 to do php4

    pls help?

As noted in EA3, the use of PHP 4 in conjunction with Apache 2 is not recommended.
