Integrating php with cpanel

I am beggining to write a payments module to cpanel in php. It would allow users to check their payments, generate invoices and order new servers.
I would like to integrate it with users cpanel. After logging into cpanel the user would see an extra icon.
I managed to find a way to add a new 'feature' and know how to create a webpage which uses cpanel's theme.
The problem is with user authentication. How can I check using PHP if the user is correctly logged in and which user is it? Does cpanel set any cookies or is it handled with a session?
I know it would be easier to write the module in perl, but I have a better knowledge of php and consider this language more flexible.
