Invalid Login SSH not working FTP does

I have searched, and most people who have the "invalid login" error are able to SSH into their server.

I am not able to SSH into my server as root (I used to be able to). Now I get "access denied" when trying SSH.

I have not changed my password. What possible reason could there be for my server to be suddenly denying me access through both WHM and SSH, while FTP continues to work just fine.

It's possible your server was compromised. If you cannot log in via ssh or whm then somehow your root password got changed.

You'll need to contact your server provider to reset the root password for you so that you can regain access.

Once in you'll need to asses the server and see if it was in fact compromised

I agree with @GOT

Possibilities:
  • Your server has been compromised and the root password reset
  • Your server provider has changed the password for some reason
  • cPHulk has trapped your IP for one reason or another
  • You added something incorrectly to the Host Access Control
  • You have made some change to the login that is now preventing you from gaining access
  • You are using the wrong password
You could try the script that will provide a minimal, default configuration of SSH to allow you to log in.

Full details at AutoFixer - cPanel Knowledge Base - cPanel Documentation

Take note of the output from running that script, as it may restart ssh on a port other than 22 if somehow the previous ssh instance is still running.

If that doesn't work, you will need to ask if your data centre/server provider has a local management RAT facility they can use to help you.

Thank you guys for the replies.

This is infuriating because the server host says "Oh, we can login on our end using those credentials, so there must be no problem."

I am pretty sure that I have not typed the password wrong 16 times. And just to make double sure, I copy and pasted it a few times.

Additionally, I tried logging in using a different IP address (from my phone) and I get the same "Invalid login" error. How in the world is my server host able to login from their end using the same credentials? They are unwilling to provide any support.

Hello @hammerthrow,

You won't be able to solve the issue if you can't access the server via SSH or WHM as root. You can request that your provider disables cPHulk and temporarily resets the SSH configuration with the safesshrestart autofixer via the instructions at:

cPHulk Management on the Command Line - cPanel Knowledge Base - cPanel Documentation
AutoFixer - cPanel Knowledge Base - cPanel Documentation

Also, just to confirm, are you using the "root" username to access Web Host Manager (port 2087)?

Thank you.
