Last night, iptables appeared to have blocked all access to the server.

What can be the source of this problem?

I am new to iptables config, never did anything with it.

Where can I find some basic info about it?

Not sure why you think it's an IP Tables situation, if you didn't change anything. Odds are more likely it is an .htaccess file causing the problem.

    # /sbin/iptables -L INPUT -v

Will tell you what rules are being used.

Server became unreachable, my datacenter told me after some time that the cause was iptables blocking all access.

    They repaired it already.

But I want to know how this came like this and what I can do about it.

    NNNils,
I suggest that you use a firewall scripts based on iptables like kiss my firewall. That is easier to handle for you and you can adjust to various scenarios.
