my box is very slow..and high load.

Sleeping processes.... usually not the culprit for a high load.
R U sure there isn't a large query process occuring against a big db? Or a ton of users hitting a smaller database on a site that gets tremendous traffic?

Your mysqladmin process list should show this- that is, a query against a DB, it should stand out from the other sleeping processes easily.

Or perhaps your load spike is caused by something else entirely?
