Is your blog post on automation still relevant?

Is the following article still the correct way to do this or is there a better method now? I ask as the post was from March of 2010:

I believe the examples from that blog post should still work (though possibly requiring some modification) - but there are probably better ways to "automate XYZ" after creating an account using standardized hooks.
