I got pulled into to look at an issue another admin was looking at and have been unable to figure it out:

The apache (1.3) error_log has a bunch of errors of the following type:

host: isc_socket_create: not enough free resources

As I can see it, the error itself comes form libisc.so, but figuring out what is calling it and causing the error is a bit tough as these older machines aren't running php-suexec.

From what I can guess/google - it's something like 'host' being called in/through PHP (they haven't disabled any functions in php and are loathe to on this installation now as it's been in place for quite some time and may break some badly coded apps :-/) - but this machine is not running PHP su-exec/suphp so figuring out who may be causing this is a bit difficult (if it's even one person, which I somewhat doubt).

In the apache start scripts, there are a few lines setting the ulimit for those processes (? not too clear on how these limits are effected).

    ulimit -n 1024
    ulimit -n 4096
    ulimit -n 8192
    ulimit -n 16384

And the output of ulimit -a for this system is:

    ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) 1000000
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
    file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
    pending signals (-i) 1024
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
    open files (-n) 4096
    pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8
POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) 819200
    stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
    cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
    max user processes (-u) 14335
    virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
    file locks (-x) unlimited

If it's relevant, hardware wise these are beefy machines - the one in question is 4xDual Core + ~12GB of ram.

    Thanks much guys!
