    Hello to the forums.

I'm trying to password protect a directory via the cPanel options. The directory is off the public_html/ but every time I protect the folder it disappears when I navigate to it - all I get is a 404 page.

Is there any reason this might be happening? Permissions maybe?

    Any ideas greatly received!

    Best,

    Oli

What do you mean off the public_html? Inside it? What are the perms on the directory?

Yes, inside public_html/www (so generally accessible from my-domain.com/...). The permissions for the folder are currently 755.

Well, www is a system "shortcut" if you will, not an actual directory. It points to public_html. If you're using it in the path, remove it.

    Hello Oli,

I am not sure whether you are using the correct procedure to password protect a directory. Please have a check on the below given URL for reference.

If you are still facing issues we can have a look into it again.

    Hi,

I also get this problem: Attempt to apply a password to a directory within Cpanel, when we do the website page returns a 404 message, when we remove the password - the folders are visible again

    1. Log into cpanel
    2. Security > Password Protect Directories.
    3. Select mp3 (/home/xxxxx/public_html/mp3)
    4. Tick password protect this directory.
    5. click save
    5. create user "xxxxx_fp"
    6 create password "22ndJan2011"
    7. browse to /http://xxxxx.co.uk/mp3/ - error 404 - not found.

    8. untick the "Password protect this directory"
    9. Save
    10. browse to /http://xxxxx.co.uk/mp3/ see directory structure - obviously unprotected.

When going to password protect the directory the File Manager pop up does not appear.

    Grateful for any advice please.
