I was just having a discussion with a buddy of mine about kernel updates on a CPanel server.

Should we be concerned about breaking WHM/CPanel or customer accounts when updating the kernel?

Is up2date via SSH a safe way to do it in Redhat, or should we pay for remote hands to do it directly on the box?

Kernel RPMs are pretty foolproof - if installed correctly.

We generally download the RPMs directly from RH and install them with rpm -ivh <kernel RPM>

Then, just update /etc/lilo.conf, keeping and renaming the old kernel <in case something DOES go wrong, just takes a quick set of remote hands on the reboot to get it back up>, and adding in the new kernel.

Pray, and shutdown -r now

I'm not sure if I want up2date doing my kernel installs, doing a -Uvh of a kernel install auto-magically updates your lilo.conf and deletes the old kernel.

Doesn't Cpanel do this

Hi all:

Quick question:

I order a ded.box with Cpanel installed. Works nicely but the disadvantage is that I didn't install it myself, so I don't know all the in's and out's..

Therefor:

Is Cpanel doing a Kernel-upgrade itself (if needed)? I see nightly updates for single packages.

Or do I have to do the kernel-upgrade myself ?

Thanks for the input!
