A client with a very large site (about 6 GB) is having troubles making a full backup from
cPanel. When the file is made, it's about 16 megs in size, and when unarchived the
    home_dir folder is empty.

Yet, the same account, has no troubles (with the exception of speed) making the nightly
backups. The total size of these backups are about 2.2 GB

The first thing I advised this client, was to cleanup his storage issues.

The /backup partition has pleanty of room.

Does anyone have any ideas why the "full backup" in cPanel gives different results?

    Thank you!

    Go on, have a guess
The cPanel full backup doesn't count against a users disk quota. The client cPanel backup does. So they will need enough quota available to actually perform the local backup, which I would guess they haven't.

    Then you are 100% correct!

    Thanks!
