The /tmp directory on our shared server is filling up with zip files that appear to come from cPanel's imap account creator tool. One of the files inside the zip file contains the line "Simple script to create an imap account for a Mac, Copyright © 2007 cPanel, Inc."

My question is, why are these being stored in /tmp at all? There appears to be one for every email address on the server who uses a Mac to access their email. Can they be safely deleted or will this in some way affect the end user's ability to access their mail?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Hi Greg.. Files created under /tmp are session files and can be removed safely. There will be a need to check the current config of the server and see as to why the files are being created. Not that I faced this issue though.

Re: large cPanel zip files filling /tmp - cPanel Staff?

hoststop, thank you for the reply. I understand that the /tmp directory contains session files, but that was not my question. My question was regarding non-session files that appear to be created by cPanel that are filling the /tmp directory and are not being automatically deleted. There are scores of zip files that look like this:

    tTf5hmxkgw.zip
    vvRYBLNKAH.zip
    w5GeV7FVRx.zip
    WSFJt8fWYH.zip
    ZAxMxR09hE.zip

The content of the zip files appears to contain Macintosh IMAP configuration files. One of these files is a script which contains the statement ""Simple script to create an imap account for a Mac, Copyright © 2007 cPanel, Inc." This is why I assume these are being created by cPanel, but not removed.

Can someone at cPanel please address this issue? Why are these being created and not deleted? Some are years old! Can I safely delete these? And yes, I know I can write a script to do this, but I need to know what they are for and can they be deleted without affecting the end-user.

    Thanks.

These files are generated when a cPanel user uses the Mail Client Configuration utility in the cPanel UI (2083:frontend/x3/mail/clientconf.html). The zip files are created on the fly, but should not be retained in the /tmp directory.

I filed this deficiency as case 57138.

Until this is fixed you'll need to clear these from your /tmp directory manually. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Thank you cpanelkenneth! I had a feeling they didn't belong there. I'll go ahead and delete them all.

    Best regards,
    Greg

This deficiency is resolved in version 11.32.1.3 and later which is now propagating.

I have seen this problem several times. Good to know it's been fixed in new version.
