I just setup a new CentOS 4.2 server and installed cPanel. Install was smooth on CentOS and cPanel. Though I can't seem to figure out why I have a load average of 1.00 when the server is completely idle.

Attached is a copy of ps aux, here is a copy of my top:
    Code:
    top - 10:45:42 up 17:08, 1 user, load average: 1.00, 1.00, 1.00
    Tasks: 86 total, 1 running, 85 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
    Cpu(s): 0.0% us, 0.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 100.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
    Mem: 1034680k total, 591828k used, 442852k free, 93008k buffers
    Swap: 2031608k total, 0k used, 2031608k free, 307912k cached

Any idea what could be causing this? I worry that this may increase dramatically when I put clients on the machine.

    The machine is dell dual p3 1.2g, 1g ram, 3x10k scsi in raid5 with a dell perc3.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

If you're using build-in CentOS kernel (2.6.9-22.0.x) it is caused by this kernel. Try to upgrade to 2.6.15-6 or downgrade to 2.6.9-11.

    Hope this will help.

We are running kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp which is the latest in the centos yum tree without any issues at all

You are running the smp kernel correct ??

I am running the smp kernel. I just noticed a new kernel release yesterday (2.6.9-34?) and upgraded to it. I will try to reboot and see if it goes away.

I also did downgrade to 2.6.9-11 and still have idle load of 1.00.

Seems like a counting issue because I have verified that the load is in fact zero. Yet what is zero to the machine = 1.00 to /proc/loadavg

    =\

I have exactly the same problem. I tried the kernel 2.6.9-5EL-smp, it works fine.

I noticed that there is a new kernel 2.6.9-34EL-smp yesterday. I installed and tried it. It has still the same problem and i switched back to the 2.6.9-5EL-smp.

I am currently running 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL on our box and the load average sits at about 0.4 most of the time. Is there any benefit upgrading to one of these other kernels?

I just noticed my top only shows Cpu(s) and not Cpu0 and Cpu1. Is there a reason for this?

You download the SMP kernel or the other one? You need the SMP kernel if you want symmetrical processor support

I found this to be a problem with hald hung up. The process wasn't using any CPU. However in top if you hit 'i' it will show running processes. Sure enough hald was the only other process besides top running.

Stopped hald from auto startup (chkconfig --levels 2345 haldaemon off) and rebooted and have not had problem since.

today I upgraded one box to kernel 2.6.9-34EL and the wa was going very very up crashing my box

I noticed that the sytem was using no more than 250000K of ram , but my system has 2GB ram . So wa was very big ...leaving idle to 0
almost all time ! There was a lot of swap also if I had about 1.8 GB free !

I downgraded to 2.6.9-11 and all works fine ... all my ram is working as required.
Anyone had the same problem with 2.6.9-34 ?

    Bye

Seems that all new CentOs kernels have this bug. Try compiling custom kernel from kernel.org - they works like a charm for us :)

I have another server with 2.6.9-34.ELsmp and it works fine . The problem seems to be with single processor .
