Hi All, my first post here, but been using WHM for many year and love it!

Here goes, we have a couple of WHM installations and non of them use local nameservers because we have a dedicated DNS server (and slave). I am wondering why WHM writes zones locally? Are they used locally anyway even tough name server is not used? We just had an issue with a hosting client that had set local (by mistake) in his zone as for his mail server but he is using an external mail server... first tought was that zone should not have been used? A bit confused here!

Are you using cPanel DNS only system? The things is that when you create a DNS cluster, when an account is created, it will create it locally on the server and the create the zone on the local server itself and then push it forward to the DNS cluster on a one-way sync manner.. However, cPanel DNS only does have UI to manage the DNS or edit it, so every change made on any local WHM webserver will push the change to the DNS server in cluster... However, if any client is using remote MX records, then he has to tick the box that says " Remote MX " out of the options given in the edit dns zone section..

Hello,

You will still see DNS zones in the /var/named/ directory when the local name server is disabled, however the name server is not running locally so no additional resources are utilized. The existence of the zones allows for the generation of entries for records that relate to features such as SPF or DKIM (Not active entries, but it shows you which entries to manually add to your own DNS server).

Thank you.
