log files for users too big

I get several of these messges for different users, why are the log files so big? what can i do to make them smaller?

While processing the log files for user tagboa, the cpu has been
maxed out for more then a 6 hour period.

I did get it too but it wasn't the log files being too big (this partuculra user's log files were rather the small ones), it was a process taking away 99% of the CPU. After killing the process the logs could be processed.

This message doesn't mean that the log files are too big, it means that your CPU has so much to do that the logs can not be processed.
