I recommend that you clean up some exim dbs. You should cron the following commands:

    /usr/sbin/exim_tidydb -t 1d /var/spool/exim reject
    /usr/sbin/exim_tidydb -t 1d /var/spool/exim retry
    /usr/sbin/exim_tidydb -t 1d /var/spool/exim wait-remote_smtp

You must execute the commands with intervals of 5 mins.

A great time for start every day is 4 AM (at this time your server is pretty quit) ;)

I get invalid useage when using tidydb for reject now. Exim4

    Usage: exim_tidydb [-t <time>] <spool-directory> <database-name>
    <database-name> = retry | misc | wait-<transport-name> | callout

Check for an inbox.lock file in that directory and remove it.

I have been having the same problem with one account.
After I delete the inbox.lock file, it works for a few hours then the lock shows up again !
How do I fix this so the lock dosent keep coming back again and again ?

I was having this problem on one account on the server and I upped the time out setting in outlook and it hasn't come back since - but it has now appeared on another of my accounts on the same server.

I know this isn't exactly a fix for the server (hey, it might not have had anything to do with it) but it was a temporary work around for me.

I am wondering if all you guys having this problem are on the same datacenter that may be having tons of packet loss ..where the pop session gets terminated often during the sessions. Can happen also when pop box is large. I don't see these much but when I do my clients say they were booted off the net in the middle of a download ..etc ..

I know BurstNet has had some latency issues they have been working through lately ..is that a possibility?

Now this problem has appeared for me. Running Edge version. Keep deleting it, and it keeps coming back.

Not accessing the account via POP at all, strictly via webmail.

Okay, there must have been a corrupted email in the inbox because the only way I could fix this is to remove the emails from the box. I moved the emails to an html file for the client to read. Working fine now.

With v8, the problem is surfacing on all our servers. Not sure what to make of it.... definitely a bug somewhere.

We had the same problems. For older cpanel versions,

/scripts/reseteximtodefaults fixed the same. But for newer ones, this script removes exim. So running /scripts/exim4 after this fixed this.

    Try it out !

This problem is not unique to cPanel servers. We've been experiencing it on others as well, oonnected only to specific email addresses which makes me think they are being sent to the accounts, or there is a problem in one of the webmail programs. (All our servers have neomail)

The easy fix is to delete inbox.lock and then restart cppop. If you don't restart cppop then you don't get rid of the rogue processes that produce the inbox.lock file.

The fix works, but I'd prefer it didn't happen. Any ideas to STOP this behaviour?

That is an imporant tip! (Restarting cppop) I had this problem a while back and it drove me mad!

Any chance a detection script could be added? (Or better yet, a fix??)

It would be difficult to detect the problem. Number one pointer would be a process owned by "username" that stays alive for longer than x minutes. But the problem could be in any inbox not necessarily "username". You can't just go looking for inbox.lock and delete it, because it is a valid file.

Maybe a cron script could delete inbox.lock and restart cppop if inbox.lock is older than 10 minutes?
    Does that sound reasonable?
I'm not real knowledgeable of POP3.
