I know there have many posts about this subject here, but I believe that my case is unique.

I have a Cpanel server called cedar.webtreehost.com. The MX record points to mail.webtreehost.com which is a different server than cedar.

However, all email originating from the Cpanel server (cedar) that is bound for a webtreehost.com account (kpate@webtreehost.com for example) gets undelivered with the "lowest numbered MX record points to local host" error message.

I'm not an exim expert by any means and would like to know how to resolve this ASAP.

Thanks in advance for your timely response.

webtreehost.com doesn't exist in /etc/localdomains, but cedar.webtreehost.com and cedar does.

    Thanks

What does your /etc/resolv.conf look like? Along the lines of this:

    search webtreehost.com
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    or something like this:

    domain webtreehost.com
    search webtreehost.com
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The resolv.conf file on cedar is:

    domain darkorb.net
    search darkorb.net
    nameserver 66.196.226.62
    nameserver 66.197.217.11
    nameserver 66.197.217.12

The first nameserver on the list returns mail.webtreehost.com as the highest priority MX server for the domain when I query it using 'dig @66.196.226.62 webtreehost.com MX'. Obviously, this doesn't resolve to local host so it must be some exim configuration/routing issue.

    Thanks again.

I think I figured it out. mail.webtreehost.com resolves to 66.196.226.51 which is the server's external address. This also happens to be one of the addresses assigned to cedar. It all makes sense now.

    I'll let you know.

    Thanks for you guidance!
