Dear Forum,

when trying to send eMails from my mail client, I get the following error message:
not permitted to relay through this server without authentication

I have a Thawte SSL 123 certificate installed on the WHM host 'rootserver.example.de' (which is equal to the server hostname used in my mail client).

As mail client, I use MS Outlook for Mac OS X, and all mail account settings are as provided in the cPanel Mail chapter. Also, the mail account domain is listed in /etc/localdomains, and NOT listed in /etc/remotedomains.

The DNS config should be fine, the 'rootserver' subdomain is added as A entry to the example.de DNS settings.

What can possibly cause the error, and what options can I try to rectify the problem?

Thanks & regards
Ralph

Hello :)

Is this only occurring in Outlook? Have you tried to reproduce the issue with another email client or with webmail?

Thank you.

Hi Michael,

I tried Webmail: there is no error message, but no mail is sent. Also, there is no email shown in webmail inbox and outbox.
I also tried iOS mail (iphone) and Android phone K9 mail, both work fine, mail is sent and also inbox mails are shown (all IMAP).

....strange, isn't it? I wonder if the problem is caused by the DNS settings, or the SSL certificate....can I check any particular setting there?

Hi Michael,

EDIT: in the post above, I logged in into Webmail with my cPanel account credentials. When logging in with my eMail and password, SENDING EMAILS VIA WEBMAIL works just fine! Still, the error message in OUTLOOK for Mac OS X remains........................................

Any idea what could cause the problem? I still think it is not a client problem though! I use other SSL enabled imap mail services, like Googlemail, with the same client. Also, I found out that when trying to send non-SSL (port 25) emails via the cpanel mailaccounts, the error message pops up as well. Is there any MX entry that is specifically required? is there any WHM setting that could cause this error??

Looking forward to hear from you. I can also open a support ticket of course.

THANK YOU.

Check to see that "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" (on the Outgoing Server tab) is checked...

Robb, thank you. Do you mean a specific WHM setting? because if not, I can assure you, all Outlook client settings are correct. Even, the error message appears independently from the smpt authentification setting in Outlook, it happens both WITH SMTP authentification required and without........

No... it would actually be in the Outlook client. Can the Outlook client send email to another email user on the WHM server(local delivery)?

Hi Guys,
Whatever the reason may have been: it works now. Last thing I changed was to resubmit the cPanel User Account settings, with SPF and CGI being enabled, in addition to what already was set.
Thanks for your support. You can close this Thread.
