I've been wading through posts regarding a mail file lock that seems to be a common problem. I know all the sympton I just don't know the solution. Here's what happens.

I've set MS Outlook to check mail every 10 minutes, it checks the mail no problem.
Then after 10 minutes it checks again, problem; the mail file is locked.

When I SSH in and check the mail directory I see two files:

    inbox
    inbox.lock

inbox.lock group permission is set to the user not mail, when I run /scripts/mailperm it outputs the problem and corrects it.

After a few minutes the file.lock disappears and MS outlook logs in checks mail ok, but after 10 minutes the same problem.

Should I set a Cron job to run mailperm every 10 minutes, if so what are the possible problems that might occur.

BTW, the problem is the same on Firebird so it's not an Outlook problem, the only difference is Firebird reports the PID that has locked the file.

Note: The contents of inbox.lock is the PID.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What version of cPanel/WHM are you running? IIRC there was some work around this a while ago, though I'm not sure what release tree it is in.

I'm currently running WHM 10.1.0 - cPanel 10.2.0-C89 on Redhat Linux ES 3

I failed to mention in my previous post that if I ignore the messages from Outlook regarding not being able to login eventually it does login and retrieve the mail.

This happens even without me running /scripts/mailperm

Hmm, I think that was the work that was done (i.e. the lock file dieing after a certain amount of time). Do you leave email in your inbox after collecting it, or do you always delete it after retrieval? If you leave it there, you might want to switch to IMAP retrieval instead. If you do delete, then I'm unsure what the solution might be.

    Jonathan,

Funny you mention about leaving mail in my inbox, when I'm in the office I set Firebird to leave the mail on the server, whereas when I'm at home I've set Outlook to download the mail.

At present the inbox size is 0, and the problem still occurs.

    Thanks

What are the ownerships on this very account...if they are user.user then change them to user.mail

    Nickb,

The ownership on the lock file is: user user. If I run /scripts/mailperm it corrects this but within 15 minutes the problem re-occurs.

    Thanks

    Sorry Nickb,

The ownership of the account directories are correct eg. user mail.

    Thanks
