Mail with attachments getting through ... sometimes.

    Hi all,

I've searched the forums and saw similar things, but nothing specifically like this. My client is accessing webmail via Microsoft Outlook. Emails with attachments are coming through sometimes, but not always. It doesn't seem to make a difference how big the files are. Some are small, and some are large.

What's happening is that outside vendors will send an email with an attachment. Sometimes they get through, and sometimes they don't. Payroll, for instance, is the same type of file everytime it's sent through. But sometimes it doesn't get there. The sender doesn't receive a response saying the email wasn't delivered, and my client doesn't know that an email was sent until they get a call saying, "Did you get it?" It's like it just sinks into this big, black hole.

    Any ideas?

    Best,

    Ken E.

    Go on, have a guess
You're probably going to have to trawl through the exim mainlog (/var/log/exim_mainlog on Linux) and search for the senders email address (or the recipients) and try and track the emails as they're processed.

I am having this problem now, but the emails do not appear in the exim log at all!

I can send to two different servers, various attachements of various sizes and this server will not receive an email with attachments.

Anything plain text is fine however!?!

Ok, this is what I am getting for any email with attachments. Any ideas? The only attachment I have had through was 0.5kb.

I was getting smtp timeouts in the exim_mainlog/errorlog for any emails with attachments.

Tried all sorts of things to sort it out.

In the end I restarted the server and it worked fine.. :S

Does the attachment failure show any pattern with regard to the type of the attachment? Your server may be filtering inbound mail based on attachments.
