when you have say a 100 member mailing list (mailman) ..and there are 100 posts in a day to this list. That'd mean the server hosting it will send out 10,000 emails right?

    yeeup... that's about it...

sometimes it might be able to combine emails, or at least send several in the same connection. ie. if you're sending a bunch of emails to aol.com addresses, it might be able to send one email to the aol.com server and tell it which addresses to send it on to... or, if the mailsending software generates customized emails for each address, it at least may be able to connect to the aol.com mailserver once, and send a number of emails through that connection.

But yeah, you can basically figure that you'll be sending 10,000 messages a day. (Though you can also use list digests to cut down on the traffic... that would combine all the emails into one daily email... or perhaps several emails when they met a certain size criteria).
