Over last few months we have had random hangs on our server (Centos 3.5) and after lots of investigation it appears that Mailscanner could be the culprit

Got our host company to leave keyboard and mouse plugged into server and relay what they could say during last crash

their answer was "The server has froozen with the process MailScanner PID 8112 causing a kernel panic. This freezes the CPU according to the screen error."

anyone else encountered issues like this with mailscanner ?

    Go on, have a guess
I've never seen MailScanner as the cause:

    1. Make sure you're using the latest version of MailScanner (upgrade using my script if it's installed with that)

    2. It's possible that since MailScanner can use a reasonable chunk of memory that it's being caught by a bad memory stick. If that could be the case then I'd get your datacenter to run memtest on the memory (they'll have to boot it onto a floppy) and check the memory out incase it's gone bad.

Ive noticed on one of our xeon servers that loads were cgoing beserk with mailscanner using up huge amounts of cpu resources

we have added 2Gb of ram (making it 4Gb) and still the loads sit up around 20+

turn off mailscanner and loads are under 2

any ideas as to why this would be happening?

I know mailscanner uses resources but this is nuts...

the servers a dual 2.8 xeon 4Gb ram running RHE3 the latest S of cpanel, latest mailscanner install and running with max 7 child processes in mailscanner
