"main" email accounts

Hello,

My understanding is very basic at this point so bear with me.
My server manager has recently insalled WHM/Cpanel for Linux 7.3. I have created a few accounts through WHM. Through Cpanel/ e-Mail acounts, I see an account that is &user&@domain.com. What is this account for? Is it an admin account? It appears that i can not delete it (atleast from cpanel) so it must be important.

I am in the process of installing/configuring a web-based email program and it needs a catchall account for the domain that it is managing. I see through Cpanel that i can create a catchall, but am wondering if this &main& account is that already?

Please help me understand this,

thanks,
bob

bob, basically yes. That e-mail account is the default main account for that domain. It is a catchall by default. You should notice the the name on the e-mail account matches the domain user that was setup. For example setting up yyy.com with user xxx will generate [email protected] as the default mail address.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks very much david.

So, through cpanel i can set up another catchall? Does this then over ride the default catchall?

I am trying to troubleshoot the install of this mail program (gossamer mail) and I am thinking that maybe i should dump the second catchall i created and point gossamer at the user@ one.

What i would really like to know how to do is set up the same catchall for more than one domain.

Thanks again for your help david,
It is coming to me slow, but steady...

David, I am not seeing how to change the default. I can see how to create a catchall, but the &main& account stays the same.

bob - The main account will always stay. But you can create another e-mail account and set it to be the default.

On the main mail menu screen there should be an option like &Default Address& or some such wording. Go into here and input the new default address.

If you tell me which theme you are using I can give you step by step.

Thanks David, I am using vertex.

Under email setttings there is a link for setting up a catchall. On that page it asks me to create a default for all unrouted mail sent to the site. This had been done already and the mail program is supposed to be pointing to this address. Problem is, no mail is being routed that is coming from outside the server box. I can send from gossamer to gossamer, or neomail to gossamer, but not from outlook to gossamer. Those get bounced back...?

Thanks again for your help,

bob

Bob, I think I know the problem, even though you specified the catchall account, you need to also go into &Email Accounts& and create that same account.

Reason being that the catchall does not verify if email address exists, it assumes that it does. Once you create the address in the accounts area it should be fine.

Shoot David, I had done that already.

Just for the heck of it i deleted and recreated that account but to no avail. Have alook at this error message and maybe you can make some sense of it:

I may look pretty dumb for this, but the only messages being bounced are from my hard drive. I have received messages at the catchall and baidarkabob accounts when sent through four different web based email programs - ie gossamer to gossamer, neomail to gossamer, netscape to gossamer, webmail to gossamer.

What does that mean? I can send messages from my HD to everyone else just fine.

Nothing from you yet?

Also of note. I am not able to view the catchall emails (if there is any) through neomail. Page never loads.

David, i think this does have something to do with my connection being satellite. I know for a fact that they have not flushed there dns lately. When i try to view the page www.flying-squirrel.org i see the registrars placeholder and not the image i posted as a test. Everyone else i know is seeing this image.

Could it be as simple as that?

I would say yes. Depending on the service provider it could take upto 72 hours (generally 24 or less) for proper propigation. Unforunatly it's very difficult to do things when dns tables from providers is not updated and maintained regularly.

I did check and can see your site fine as well. I'd say give 24 hours and if things do not change for I would then contact your Sat provider for assistance with their dns updates.

I swapped smtp on my client side software. This time no bounce back (good sign) but no message in twenty minutes.

I am just going to let this go until the dns thing is figured out. Thanks for all your help david.
