I am attempting to set up my cPanel box so that direct login (SSH) as root is disabled. The objective it to set up a user account (not a cpanel account but a user account via the useradd command), add the user to the wheel group, then use that new account to SSH and use su- to change to root when root access is needed. This user shoudl also have ftp access to its home (/home/newusername).

The problem is that when I user add newusername, passwd newusername, then try to log in to ftp, I can't get in. The logs are simply telling me there is an authentication error. I am pretty sure I am missing something simple. These pain meds I am on for my back have me kind of loopy. Any ideas what it is that I am screwing up?

Use SFTP and it works just fine (and is much safer).

I tested it with Filezilla before I replied, works fine here.

I found the error. It had nothing to do with what you provided however I do much appreciate your attempt and suggestions.

It would be great if you could share the exact steps you followed to fix the error. I believe the ftp users are added using something like "pure-pw useradd" through backend in cPanel based servers.

    Cheers!!!
