    Hi,

Our /var directory became full, so I had to make some room. In the exim_mainlog I got these messages until the error was discovered and resolved:

2012-09-29 05:48:13 1THo2H-0003gJ-JS Message abandoned: Spool write error (No space left on device) while receiving message from ......

What does it mean that the message has been abandoned? Does the incoming connection/server get a message that the mail couldn't be delivered?

Will the mail get lost in space where neither the sender or receiver gets an error message?

    Howdy,

This means the message was dead lettered if it could not be returned to the sender.

    Thanks!

How can I see if a mail has been returned to the sender or not?

And thanks for the answer :)

Could you try a full exigrep on the message ID?

    Code:
    exigrep 1THo2H-0003gJ-JS /var/log/exim_mainlog
Also, you might check the sender email instead to see what it shows:

    Code:
    exigrep emailsender@domain.com /var/log/exim_mainlog
Please replace emailsender@domain.com with the sender's full email address.
