    Hello ppl,

I have the following problem with one of our customers.
he has 10 email accounts in one domain and all of them work OK
except 3 mail accounts that keep downloading the same message through pop3 !

What I mean is that e.x. account test1@test1.com every 4 minutes downloads the same message through pop3 . (i can see this in /var/log/maillog, in totalxfer field, which is the same every time the user logs out of pop3)

As you understand, this consumes the bandwidth of the cpanel account VERY fast!

Does anyone have any idea ?

    Thank you in advance,
    akox

    A couple of things:

    1) You mention a concern about bandwidth. How big are the files sitting in these 3 accounts? If you've set a max quota on their mailbox, and the files in the mailbox are close to the max, the system may not be have enough space to delete the messages after they are downloaded. If this is the case, try increasing their email quota and have them try again.

    2) If #1 is not the case, have your client check how these 3 pop accounts are setup in their email client (i.e. Outlook, etc.). Are they configured differently than the other 7? Are the 3 accounts set to leave mail on the server? Or use imap access?

    pop3

The user has about 700Kb inbox.
But if every user reads its mailbox every 4 minutes, 24h a day then we have

    (60/4) * 700 * 24 = 252000Kb = 252MB a day each user
    252* 3 = 756MB a day (3 users).

There is no quota problem because the mailbox quota is at 10MB.

I'm going to check the outlook configuration but i don't think i will find the problem there :/

i've delete the inbox once, and it got "filled" again. I'm going to try this again.

    thanks

The problem seems to originate by a "broken" customer's firewall which downloads the emails via POP3.
This firewall seems to be using the "LAST" pop3 command which was abolished from the pop3 standard a long time ago.
Cpanel POP3 responds to the LAST command by sending
    +OK 0
and so the firewall gets confused, downloads the messages but never uses the DELE command of the pop3 standard to delete the messages.

You can use tcpdump or ethereal to see what is really happening in your situation.
