Messages Log Gone!

A friend of mine helping admin my machine yesterday took the liberty of making a copy of the messages file which was of enormous size, up in 72 megs area, and then deleted the original, he then created another empty messages file, and now it is still at 0 a day later. So where are messages being written?? Can anyone help me here??

Try restarting xinetd - that's generally enough to kick it back to life.
