On one cpanel server running latest stable on rh 7.3., modprob always seems to be running at 50%+ ., if i down grade the iptaples this seems to fix the problem with a reboot.

However how can I stop this problem re accuring as it is becoming slightly annoying ?

I had the same issue with modprobe - it was eating 90% of the CPU. Rebooting only fixed the issue for about 24 hours then we had to reboot again.

We just upgraded the machines kernel hoping it will fix the issue. Try updating your kernel to the latest release.

It all depends on what mod is running. Like modprobe ip_conntrack_irc can be removed but others depend on FireWall if you have one up and running.

does it tell you what specific modprobe is running the high processes?

You can usaully remove them by SSH to your server as root and rmmod
