-Multiple Pop3 connections in Outlook Failing After mbox-maildir conversion

Our DC Recently upgraded our box to cPanel 11 stable and then did the mbox to maildir conversion. The night before the conversion Outlook was checking all 8 email accounts on that server without issue. The next morning we started getting the 0x800ccc0f error message on 4 of the accounts.

Test 1: I created a new profile in Outlook, create all 8 email accounts, got the same error message on 4 of the accounts but different accounts this time. I then deleted accounts from Outlook one at a time and rearranged the accounts and seems that Outlook checks 4 mail accounts and then gives the error starting on the 5th account and any more after that.

Test 2: I created all 8 email accounts in Outlook Express and never received the error message, it checked all the boxes and sends without issue.

We have several customers that are using later versions of Outlook with the same issue. They can only set it up to check a max of 4 accounts without getting that error message.

Does anyone know if there is a configuration setting in Exim or in the new cPanel that limits the number of concurently email connections coming from an IP? Although if there is, why would it let Outlook Express check more than 4 accounts and not Outlook? Unless Outlook checks multiple accounts simultaneously and Outlook Express checks multiple accounts consecutively?

Anyone else having this issue?

Not the same accounts... If you setup Outlook to check account 1,2,3,4. It works fine. Then setup account 5,6,7,8, you get error on account 5,6,7,8. Now setup Outlook to check only accounts 5,6,7,8, works fine. It is not a specific mailbox because you can setup Outlook express to check all 8 accounts and not get the error message.

Sorry for the delayed response, I knew there was a connection setting somewhere (but couldn't remember where) where you could limit the number of connections coming from a specific IP for POP3/IMAP. It just nagged at me since I submitted a response about those settings not terribly long ago.

It isn't an Exim setting but a Courier setting. Courier is the daemon used for POP3 and IMAP services on cPanel/WHM. You can adjust these settings in WHM -> Service Configuration -> Courier Configuration.

If the settings are set for more than 4 connections and authentications per IP permitted, it might not be those settings. In that case, you may want to check your server's mail logs to determine why the connections are failing. The POP3 and IMAP logs are stored in:

/var/log/maillog
/var/log/messages

Just wanted to post a thank you --
we had exactly the same problem following the exact same conversion, and the fix worked perfectly. Thank you!

ps.
when configuring the setting via cpanel -- remember to set the max connections per ip also for the SSL connections, which for me were blank on entering the configuration page.
