Can someone clarify the proper way to setup mx records in cpanel?

    I did it this way

    domain. 14400 MX 0 mail.externalmailserver.com.
    mail 14400 CNAME ipaddressofexternalmailserver

This is not working according to the customer and dnsreport.com

    Please clarify

The proper entry should be :-

    domainname. IN MX 0 domainname.
    mail IN CNAME domainname.

The domainname has an A record above which refers to the ServerIp. Also refer the below url for some explanation :-
