it seems when you add a domain by default whm has the dns zone as

    mail cname domain.com
    domain.com mx 0 domain.com

    isnt this wrong?

    shouldnt it be
    domain.com mx 0 mail.domain.com
    mail.domain.com A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    ????

It will show its wrong in DNSreport because it will show the IP really resolves to the hostname, you could change the dns template so all new accounts are setup like your example, but we had a problem with doing this when we migrated servers it did not update the A record for the MX entry

In most cases mail.domain.com and domain.com point to same IP , which is considered by default and hence

    mail cname domain.com
    domain.com mx 0 domain.com

    is not incorrect.

If the domain A record points somewhere else , then the entry

    domain.com mx 0 mail.domain.com
    mail.domain.com A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    comes into picture.
