Does /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock exist? Is the mysql daemon running? You can verify by executing the commands below:

To verify if the directory exists:
    ls -l /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

If it does not exist, mysqld may not be running. Verify this by executing:

    fuser 3306/tcp

If it outputs several PID(s), you could see what each pid is running by executing 'ps aux | grep PID'.

Another easier way to verify if mysql is running is to either execute 'service mysql status' or 'ps aux | grep mysql".

Post your findings so we may assist you if you require of it...
