I've upgraded my MySQL RPMs to versoin 4.x and it worked beautifully. This version has support for InnoDB tables, which some clients request.

The only problem I found was that the name of the script that runs MySQL changed from safe_mysqld to mysqld_safe, so /scripts/restartsrv does not recognize that mysqld is running (it does a grep safe_mysql on ps uxaww), and ends up restarting the database engine on every check! So I had to downgrade to 3.23.56... :(

Nick, could you change this check to something else? Like

    mysqladmin ping

    or something?

    Regards,
    Dario

why not pico the script and change the lines where it greps for mysqld_safe and change them to the new one?

No, MySQL 4.0.12 is in stable or "production" status. The new alpha or beta is now 4.1

I'm just going to bump this to the top, because this past week I have had about a half dozen 'potential' customers inquire about MySQL 4 on our servers... there is a huge demand for 4.0 support...

I've installed it on one of my servers, with limited success. But without recompiling every single thing and dealing with WHM thinking the mysql service is failed... it isn't really worth it. So I'm waiting patiently for 4.x support....

Tack on another vote. I think it's worth it just for the Fulltext searching abilities alone. :)

That would work for a while, but Cpanel updates the backend scripts from the main server, overwriting any changes. Yes, I could do a chattr +i restartsrv to prevent that, but if the script is changed to have new features or bug fixes, my "patched" copy could become incompatible with the rest of the system.

Fulltext searching works in 3.23 just create a full text index.

Some of the really cool features in mysql 4 include row level locking, query caching and being able to set runtime variables without restarting mysql.

maybe it will fix alot of the max connection / crashes that are so frequent in a 3.x.5!
