MySQL "alarm" problem

We seem to be having a problem with MySQL on one particular box running CPanel... sometimes customers can't use MySQL, zombie MySQL processes build up (we've had 40 at one time once), and the following error message appears in the CPanel:

Timeout: Alarm at bin/mysqladmin.pl line 14.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening? Is it a problem in CPanel?
