mysql connection problem

I am having a hard time setting up a database on this server and having the site itself on a different server (remotely hosted database). I am getting the following error:

"Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

Port 3306 is open and skip networking commented out in my.cnf

using mysql 5x

Any ideas? Forum search shows no results
