Whats up with MySQL? We have an optimised my.cnf on the server which has a total of 2gigs of ram.

When i run top the available memory FREE is between 29M and 40M. If i restart MySQL the available ram jumps back to over 1,000M and stays there for a day. Then next day, its back to 29M - 40M. MySQL is hogging too much RAM for no reason. Whats up with this?

On my Freebsd boxes i remove MySQL 4.1.19 due to all the dumps above. Something is not right.

I'v reverted back to 4.1.10a which never exhibited any problems.

    Whats a girl to do????

    Go on, have a guess
Those files are the binary log files. You should make sure that you comment out log-bin in /etc/my.cnf, restart MySQL and you can then remove them.

The amount of Free memory on a Linux/BDS server isn't particularly relevant. The important figure is the amount of memory available by combining free memory with cached memory.
