MySQL Error 2006 Random Occurences

I've had this error happen on and offer ever since I made the upgrade to MySQL 5. It only occurs for very short periods of time and I've never noticed anything being down or MySQL having to actually restart. However, two different scripts vB and a link directory script have now sent notices about the issue:

mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: Can't
connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

The MySQL log doesn't show a thing. The vB error occurs roughly every day and I only receive a message or two from it. The error on the LD script happened last night for the first time.

I'm puzzled, I tried updating MYSQL again, but I'm not sure if that will help.
