    Go on, have a guess
Just incase - What are your permissions on /tmp? they should be 1777, i.e.:

    chmod 1777 /tmp

    Stop MySQL server,
    run safe_mysqld --socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
    Then run ln -s /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
    Start MySQL

    Did you try this?
