Every now and then I receive a msg from my host that mysql has failed and a restart was attempted. In all cases I have it has come back up but I am trying to figure out why it is failing. I have checked the logs and there seems to be no indication why it was failed.

Is there anything logged by cpanel as to why it was failed? If not is there a way to try to get some logging of why it failed?

    Thank you for any ideas,
    Kyle

I'd try looking in /var/lib/mysql for files that start with $ and end with .err, those may shed some light as to why MySQL is failing.
