MySQL Root Password does not work??!

I set mysql root password through WHM
    checked at

    /root/.my.cnf and it was there

but when I type mysql in SSH it doesn't ask about any password.

Can somebody help me on this?

    Hi chirpy

    You mean that

    # mysql
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 243 to server version: 4.0.25-standard
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.
    mysql>

    is ok?

    I was expecting
    # mysql
    password:

it is okay.. you have logged in to mysql..

if you want authentication, then remove the pass from my.cnf
